It’s practically impossible to find vegan tartar sauce at the market, and if you do, chances are it doesn’t taste very good. With that in mind, I created this delicious vegan tartar sauce using 5 simple ingredients.
To keep the prep work at a minimum I went with dill relish instead of pickles. This eliminates the need for chopping so the sauce is easy to make and ready in minutes.
When you need a good condiment to slather on vegan seafood, this is the go-to sauce. It’s also customizable so you can add any herbs or seasonings to fit your taste.
Ingredients You'll Need
This tartar sauce comes together with these 5 vegan pantry and fridge staples.
Substitutions are below and full amounts are listed in the recipe card.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Vegan mayo - This is the base for this creamy sauce. I like to use my homemade vegan mayo. Feel free to do the same or use your favorite mayo.
- Dill relish - This makes the recipe easy to throw together. If you prefer the fresh taste of pickles feel free to swap them out.
- Fresh dill - The dill enhances the flavors of the tartar sauce. If you don’t have any, use dried dill or another herb, such as parsley, as a replacement.
- Lemon juice - This gives the sauce its fresh tangy taste.
- Black pepper - Use the black pepper for a spicy touch, or leave it out and keep the sauce mild.

Serving and Storage Suggestions
To serve: Enjoy this condiment as a dip for:
- vegan fish sticks
- tofu chicken nuggets
- vegan fish and chips
- onion rings
- fries
It’s also great on vegan foods such as burgers, fish sandwiches, wraps, crab cakes, or pretty much any fried food.
To store: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Helpful Tips
Drain the relish: For a consistent recipe, the liquid in the relish should be drained. To do this, measure out 1 Tablespoon and use the back of a spoon to push the liquid out while it's still in the measuring spoon. Some of the liquid can be added to the tartar sauce after mixing and tasting.
Dill relish: Make sure to use dill relish and not sweet relish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Fresh dill pickles can be used. Finely chop them and measure them out in place of the relish.
Try it with capers, minced red onion, mustard, or a dash of hot sauce for some heat.
